Leadership Development

Leadership Development

Big problems require bold leaders who are equipped with the perspective, understanding, and skills necessary to navigate the complex landscape of public education as well as the challenges that racial and social inequity present. Therefore, SEF leadership development programs are designed to build and strengthen leaders ranging  from those who are emerging to those who are longstanding to work across the education continuum and in communities throughout the South.

Current Leadership Development Programs:

Racial Equity Leadership Network (RELN)

The Racial Equity Leadership Network aims to strengthen the capacity of district leaders to address disparities in learning and opportunity for low-income students and students of color, believing absent meaningful change in policy and practice, the current student outcomes will remain unchanged. Through the leadership development experience, leaders will become more knowledgeable, skilled, and effective in leading and sustaining reform, connected to data, policy analysis, effective practice, and coaching. Southern Education Leadership Initiative (SELI)

For nearly 15 years, SELI has provided trainings and paid summer fellowships to a diverse and inspired group of more than 200 undergraduate and graduate level students interested in working with nonprofit organizations and school districts to make systemic changes in education policy and practice.

Ginny Looney Servant Leader Award

In honor and remembrance of Ginny Looney, SEF has established the Ginny Looney Servant Leader Award to support and acknowledge young leaders who are participating in the Southern Education Leadership Initiative that exude the characteristics of Looney, a long-time Atlanta-based attorney committed to ethics and restoring faith in government.
