The two interstate highways crossing South Carolina – I-85 and I-95 – do not intersect, either literally or figuratively, in this state. Both roadways were built on hopes of increasing prosperity, but only one has delivered that promise to those who live alongside its corridors. The I-95 corridor represents half the population living alongside I-85, but twice the unemployment and demonstrably higher rates of poverty. Miles To Go South Carolina (2002) |

In Houston Independent School District, an ACORN-teachers alliance managed to unseat the Chamber of Commerce candidate and shift the balance of power to a solid pro-teacher majority and away from interests whose primary concerns were winning food and bus contracts and vouchers. The ACORN campaign emphasized bringing class size down to the state limits and dealing with the issue that 15 percent of teachers are substitutes. In North Forest, ACORN members recently elected a school board member who beat an incumbent and lost a second squeaker by just 13 votes. In Pecan Park, members took to the streets to win cross walks, school zone, and solar powered flashing lights. |

| The San Antonio Education Partnership was established in 1988 to address several areas of concern. Founders were primarily concerned with the inadequate school completion and performance rates by students from the lower socioeconomic and predominantly minority areas of the city. This dismal picture of achievement was linked to a second concern regarding the future local workforce. As a city with approximately a 60% minority population, a poorly educated workforce would severely limit the city's future economic prospects. |
