| There are strong signs that education at all levels in Louisiana is making progress, thanks primarily to recent reforms and sustained increases in funding over the last six years. The Council for a Better Louisiana has played a leadership role in this reform effort and has been a champion of tying funding increases to higher standards and greater accountability. |

| New Orleans ACORN has dealt primarily with school safety issues. They have fought for enforcement of asbestos removal laws, forced the city to re-hire crossing guards who had been laid off during budget cuts, and won "children crossing" signs. They have campaigned for youth programs in schools (Boy Scouts) and set up after school tutorials with Teach America. Most recently, ACORN parents have begun a campaign for universal testing of all kindergartners and first graders for gifted programs, improved student-teacher ratios, lobbied for raises for school employees, and called for an end to rebating school taxes to local industry. |

| The Academic Distinction Fund works to raise and invest private sector funds to promote innovations that will lead to academic excellence for students in East Baton Rouge Parish Public Schools. In providing this private sector leadership, the Fund promotes best practices in education, supports teachers in their work and their professional growth, and encourages schools and the community to foster improved teaching and learning. |

| The Greater New Orleans Education Foundation (GNOEF), a nonprofit organization of business, educational, civic, and political leaders, was created in March 1998, in response to the city's issues relative to reforming its failing public schools. Its purpose is to assure an effective and quality education for every child in the five-parish region of New Orleans. |

| The Orchard Foundation is a nonprofit local education fund established as a resource for Central Louisiana that works with school districts, businesses, and communities to improve educational opportunities in a nine-parish service area: Allen, Avoyelles, Catahoula, Grant, LaSalle, Natchitoches, Rapides, Vernon and Winn. Orchards' mission is to improve academic achievement for Central Louisiana students by promoting best practices; recruiting, retaining, and rewarding excellent and innovative teachers; building school leadership; and strengthening school and community relationships. |

| The Young Leaders’ Academy empowers African American males ages eight to 17 in the Baton Rouge area by providing them with leadership and academic skills and exposing them to community organizations and business leaders. The Academy has developed a rigorous program of educational enrichment, leadership training and community service. |
