In 2004, The Southern Education Foundation marked the 50 year anniversary of the United States Supreme Court’s landmark decision in Brown v. Board of Education, by creating the “Education Summers Leadership Initiative.” The Initiative is an investment in providing a new generation of young people with the opportunity to continue efforts to improve Southern education quality, access, achievement and attainment. Marking the fifth year of the Leadership Initiative, the Southern Education Foundation is releasing “Growing Our Own: Education Leadership Development for a New Era.”
In just five years, SEF has provided summer internships in Southern nonprofits and foundations to over 93 students. Captured in the report’s pages are not only the words and ideas of the bright and promising young people who have participated in the Leadership Initiative, but information about the real impact the Initiative has had on the students, the independent sector and education equity in the South and the nation.
The report describes who these passionate young people are, how they were hand-picked to participate, the in-depth training they receive, the meaning behind their placement experiences, and the Leadership Initiative’s impact on their future career trajectories. Many of SEF’s Interns have gone on to become teachers, policy-makers, school administrators, children’s advocates and, most importantly, leaders.
