The report documents the vital role of Black colleges in the South in helping to meet the national imperative to produce more professionals in the field of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) at a time of rising shortages. It reports that HBCUs are producing close to one-fourth of the entire nation’s African American college graduates in the sciences and even much higher percentages in some fields such as natural sciences. The report highlights the STEM programs of six HBCUs and some of the remarkable graduate students who received their undergraduate degrees at HBCUs
