In 2004, SEF began a region-wide summer leadership program in recognition of the 50th anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court's opinion, Brown v. Board of Education, which marked the end of legal segregation of America’s schools. College students from Southern states have an opportunity to learn about the historical and contemporary issues of Brown and to become involved in effective efforts to reform and improve Southern education.
SEF has now placed 103 students in nonprofits and foundations throughout the South working to eradicate education inequities. A report on the 5-year program and some of the participants is available here
