| This interactive timeline provides a chronology of major events and developments in Southern education since the Civil War. It also offers informative written, audio and video clips to help interpret each historical era.
SEF's origins go back to 1867 with the establishment of the Peabody Education Fund. In later years, other education funds focusing on the South also were established: in 1882 the John F. Slater Fund; in 1907 the Jeanes Fund; and in 1936 the Virginia Randolph Fund. These four funds merged in 1937 to form the Southern Education Foundation (SEF).
