Fred Jones

Director of Government Relations

Fred Jones serves as the Director of Government Relations for the Southern Education Foundation (SEF). His core responsibilities include advocating for the advancement of SEF’s public policy priorities at the local, state, and federal levels. Fred will work in concert with the CEO to strengthen and build relationships with policymakers and government officials in the South to ensure SEF’s legislative priorities are supported and enacted across the 17 states in which SEF represents.

Fred began his career at the U.S. House of Representatives working for the Education and Workforce Committee, where he played a supporting role to help reauthorize the Higher Education Act, the National and Community Service Act, and the Affordable Care Act. He also served as a Legislative Associate for the Alliance for Excellent Education and the Director of Government Affairs for the United Negro College Fund, managing secondary school and higher education public policy and appropriations issues impacting low-income students. Most recently, Fred served as the Director of Education Innovation for Trident United Way as well as the Deputy Director for SouthCarolinaCAN, leading a local parent advocacy program in Charleston, SC.

In the fall of 2017, Fred completed the Riley Institute Diversity Leaders Initiative at Furman University. He is also an Institute for Responsible Citizenship Scholar, a National Collegiate Scholar, a Coro Fellow, and a 10x All-American Track and Field athlete. Fred received his B.A. in Political Science from Tufts University and his M.B.A. from the University of Maryland, College Park Robert H. Smith School of Business. He has a beautiful wife and a wonderful newborn son.
