The MSI Consortium for Innovation and Change highlights and supports state-of-the-art initiatives that effectively improve institutional practices and outcomes for students. SEF identifies and engages institutions that have deep interest and/or investment in enhancing practices that directly improve student success.
SEF advances innovative and effective practices by
testing exiting programs, performing campus demonstrations, and assessing the effectiveness of promising programs.
The Consortium for Innovation and Change is focused on three primary issues:
-
Improving the practice of developmental education;
-
Advancing the capacity of institutions to assess and articulate student learning outcomes;
-
Piloting Open Educational Resources (OER) to reduce textbook costs and enhance learning.
Improving Developmental Education
Given the number of students who participate in developmental education programs and their importance to degree completion, the stakes are too high and the resources are too scarce to ignore the need for better evidence about developmental education programs, especially at MSIs. SEF is responding to a pressing need to demonstrate which program models or practices actually work and which innovations have promise.
SEF’s project on developmental education is focused on three primary goals:
-
Use evidence to establish which developmental education practices or program models are most promising;
-
Engage, support, and convene a consortium of institutions focused on advancing innovative practices related to developmental education;
-
Advance the national conversation about developmental education in ways that focus on solutions, promising practices, and student success.
SEF is currently engaging six institutions focused on improving developmental education:
