P-12 Education

SEF undertakes a wide range of strategies and programs that involve research, analysis, advocacy, technical assistance, and outreach to improve the education of low income students and students of color. Our P-12 Education program works to:

Improve education policy and practice from Pre-Kindergarten through graduation
Inform the public about vital education issues and policy options
Strengthen parent, school, and private sector efforts to better meet the needs of underachieving students
Promote high quality, universal education for all children

Higher Education

Through research, policy analysis, and programs of service SEF’s higher education program aims to improve student success, degree completion, and institutional effectiveness. These programs are particularly focused on poor and underrepresented students and the institutions of higher education most likely to serve them. SEF is working to improve the capacity of Minority-Serving Institutions to serve more students in ways that markedly improve their chances of earning a college degree. SEF often partners with leading higher education associations, government agencies, research communities and civic organizations to advance its higher education programs.

Southern Education Leadership Initiative (SELI)

The Southern Education Leadership Initiative is a unique leadership development program designed to advance equity and excellence in education in the poorest regions of the country, from pre-kindergarten through higher education. Since its inception in 2004, the Leadership Initiative has provided summer internships to over 135 undergraduate and graduate students at roughly 70 nonprofits throughout the South. The program was founded to acknowledge with not just words but with deeds, the 50th anniversary of the U. S. Supreme Court decision in Brown v. Board of Education, which marked the end of legal segregation in schools.
