About the Speaker

Thais is a doctoral candidate at in the Department of Educational Policy Studies at Georgia State University. Her research examines the benefit of community-informed professional development with urban teachers through a Participatory Action Research (PAR) framework.

Thais is a Southern Regional Education Board (SREB) Doctoral Fellow, and a  former fellow of University of Colorado Boulder UC Engage Community-Based Research and a former doctoral intern at Southern Education Foundation. She was awarded the 2016 Outstanding Student Researcher Award by the Georgia Educational Research Association (GERA) for a research paper titled, “That was Then, This is Now: A Critical Policy Analysis Juxtaposing the Proposed Opportunity School District with Brown versus Board of Education.” She served as the chair of the Urban Education Think Tank in the Alonzo A. Crim Center for Excellence in Urban Education and as an executive committee member of Alpha Upsilon Alpha (AUA), a literacy honor society sponsored by the International Reading Association.

Through her leadership and advocacy, AUA hosted the first annual Black Girls Read! An African-American Read-In Celebrating the African American Female Literary Legacies of the Past, Present, and Future introducing more than 150, K-12 girls to books written by Black female authors.
